Mikhail Oreshnikov was detained in Indonesia

On November 6, 2020, Mikhail Oreshnikov, a member of the neo-Nazi movement Misanthropic Division, was detained at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, at the request of the National Central Bureau of Interpol of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia. He is charged with causing bodily harm.

Oreshnikov was placed on the wanted list in Russia in 2014.

Previously, Oreshnikov lived in Cheboksary, where he was convicted in 2009 of attempting to set fire to a police station. He was also a member of the Restrukt group and the leader of the Cheboksary cell of Occupy Pedophiliay. Oreshnikov claimed in the media that “we have caught 18 pedophiles in one year…”

Ukrainian media report that Oreshnikov severely beat up police officers at a rally in Russia in support of Ukraine. This is what Oreshnikov had to say about it: “I was at that time in contact with Ukrainian nationalists; I went to the Maidan, and when I returned to Cheboksary, I told local journalists the truth about the events in Ukraine. I was immediately called in for questioning under the pretext of investigating the theft of a bicycle. I was beaten a little, but the police report said that it was I who hit a police officer on duty. They opened ... a criminal case for ‘beating a representative of the authorities’.” He crossed the border with Ukraine by car and asked for political asylum, but was denied.

In Kiev, Oreshnikov joined the Azov movement and worked in its press service. Together with members of the Kiev cell of Restrukt, he carried on with the activities of Occupy Pedophiliay. He obtained Ukrainian residence permit and then citizenship, but did not apply for renunciation of his Russian citizenship.

Over the past year, Oreshnikov corresponded with Maxim (Tesak) Martsinkevich, who was serving his time behind bars.

After Oreshnikov was detained in Jakarta, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine got actively involved. On November 23, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Indonesia held a meeting with the leadership of the local department of the National Central Bureau of Interpol where he said that “the Russian side is abusing Interpol tools for politically-motivated prosecution of citizens.” The diplomatic mission of Ukraine then sent a note to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia.

On November 28, as a result of the efforts of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oreshnikov was released from jail and flew to Kiev.
