On October 13, 2013 mass riots erupted in the West Biryulyovo
district of Moscow. A crowd of local residents, including a group of football
fans and some members of a nationalist group, staged pogroms in the shopping
center “Biryuza” as well as at a vegetable warehouse. The violence was finally stopped
with a force of anti-riot police. The reason for the riot was the murder of
Egor Scherbakov by a person from the Caucasus or Central
Asia.
On September 15th
2013 in Saratov, members of a nationalist “people’s assembly” associated with
the activist group “Russian Joggers” organized what they called a “white tram”.
The
following is our monthly review of instances of xenophobia and radical
nationalism, along with any government countermeasures, for September 2013. The
review is based on material gathered by Sova Center
in the course of our daily monitoring.
On September 27, activists from the group “Shield of Moscow” raided the
places of residence of many migrant workers in Kapotnya, a district in
south-eastern Moscow.
